At first I thought, “Holy crap, is that really a Peugeot 505?” An then the Alfa pulled up behind it. I only had a second to grab my phone and snap a picture before the light changed...

Oh man, not sure which I would want more! That Alfa can’t be in a factory color...

Holy crap! They HAVE to be a convoy, right? Gotta be otherwise 2020 just got a whole lot less believable.

And I'd take the Alfa. The blue color really solidifies that.

No, the Alfa guy was as excited as I was to see the Peugeot. He was honking and giving him the thumbs-up.

Well, clearly there is is a wrinkle in space-time. Realities are upturned! The sheer unlikeliness of that happening is crazy.

Mere hours later I saw a newer Renault crossover quite far away from any border. What a day for u nli kely car spots!

Kinja'd!!!

Still not sure what it was though. I never saw the plate well and I only barely made out the Renault badge (after I took this photo when I wasn't sure it WASN'T a Kia Sportage).

That’s a Captur, probably the “Global Access” variant (i.e. for developing markets). Oddly enough, it’s the Koleos that I see more here in Tucson.

You regularly see Renault Koleoses? I guess you’re a good bit closer to the Mexican border but that’s not a short drive. It’s practically unheard of here.

So I did get the name right in my DOTS post. Such an unusual thing to see.

yee yee I’ve only been back for a few days, but before I went home for the summer there’d be lots of foreign vehicles at the local shopping plazas wearing Mexican plates; usually they’re Nissans or Fords, but some interesting ones were def the Koleos’, a Mitsubishi Grandis, a Peugeot 206 and Berlingo, and some of them FCA Dodge Attitude/Neon/small shitboxes. Seems it’s a relatively porous border (~50 miles away) which I think is super cool, makes for fun car spotting!

You should post some of those DOTS spots! That sounds like some good carsp otting for sure. You never know what might wander over the border with the tourists. I didn’t realize Tuscon was that close actually but I’ve never really been anywhere near there. I’ve actually not been anywhere of note really. I’ve seen a handful of illegal JDM imports (recently an R34 S kyline GTR!) but never anything so far away from the 25 years rule. And never really anything French on the road (second time!).

My apologies, it’s ~75 miles, but hey, still nearby!  I think many come for shopping/family. I am so bad with phone photos, but I definitely have posted them in the past and should definitely go rummage through my phone backups; there are a few SM’s and DS’s in the vicinity that I’ve seen on Instagram but have yet to catch DOTS, but we definitely have an early JDM Century and R32 locally running about!

With cell phone pics, don’t zoom very much. It’s all digital zoom so you can crop it for the same effect and usually have less blur. I usually do a 1.5 zoom and then crop in Google Photos so it happens before compression.

That’s pretty interesting. I don’t know of any hydropneumatic Citroens (never seen one) but I’ve seen two 2CVs and I’ve talked to the owner of a Citroen HY Van food truck. French stuff is still incredibly uncommon in the states. I’ve seen far more than most and my car count is still below double digits.

Oooh, a century! I've seen the occasional Kei truck (quite seldom) and there's a JDM import shop that had an illegal Silvia and a very nice R32 Skyline sedan. I also saw a RHD Supra outside once that was tragically a slushbox. Gray market stuff is incredibly uncommon still.

The Alfa being on Romanian plates is also bit odd for Orey-gone.

That’s exactly my problem! iPhone 7 looks crap to begin with, add windshield glare and bad lighting and it’s hopeless :(

People back in the Bay are still weird and hipster enough to keep the old stuff alive, seen plenty of 505's and there’s an SM that lives down the street from my boyfriend that I have yet to get a picture of (lives under a cover most the time sadly).

I’m guessing we get LA imports so it’s generally pretty high-profile, very much 25+ legal JDM, I personally haven’t been out car spotting too much but I’ve definitely seen Instagram photos of th e local scene.

Now try that on a crappy old Moto that I use to take all my photos. Yet if you look through my photos they usually turn out ok. It’s all in technique and I don’t even have a very steady hand.

Atlanta is great for car spotting but it is no LA. There is nowhere on earth like car spotting there, or so I've heard. Never been out that way. I've not seen any 505 or SM anywhere. And since we don't have rural mail delivery vehicles here there isn't much weird and wacky JDM stuff. I see the occasional importer tuner car (illegal R34 Skyline GTR!) and maybe a kei truck once in a blue moon.

Those look like Romanian plates if I peer closely. Wonder why it has them, given that it would have been an Alfa 75 there?

Yeah, I don’t know what the deal is with the plates. He had an Oregon “SP” plate (collector/specialty vehicle) in the rear window. Which makes it technically legal, just odd.

There’s a guy who lives near here who has a couple of old Ladas, and at least one of them is on Russian (or maybe Ukrainian?) pre-EU license plates. Not sure how he gets away with it. Not sure I want to know.
